Trump Conundrum

By Douglas V. Gibbs

I get it.  Trump is saying the things we wish the GOP politicians would say. . . and do.  He's hard hitting, taking no junk from anybody.  The Donald is saying everything you want to hear, therefore, he has been holding on to a solid lead in the Republican Party race for a 2016 Presidential Candidate.

Despite Fox News zeroing in on the once a billionaire, a billionaire again, hotel mogul, asking him questions about the War on Women and his history with Democrats, Trump came out of the first GOP Debate pretty much unscathed.  In fact, after the debate was all said and done, he got even more popular with Republican Voters.

Scott Walker and Ted Cruz, the more conservative of the bunch that actually has some kind of political experience, have actually lost a little standing in the polls, making one wonder if Trump is widening the gap between him and the have-nots because he is taking away supporters from the two of three candidates many have assumed would be the ones to duke it out come primary time (the third being establishment moderate RINO Jeb Bush).  Trump's tough talk about immigration, and building a wall to keep the illegal aliens (that includes, according to Trump, criminals and rapists) out of our country, has struck a nerve.  As a businessman (despite losing his millions and billions a few times, and then reemerging when the bankers decided the Trump name was big enough to keep him afloat) he is considered by many to be a favorable candidate when it comes to the economy.  His tough talk about ISIS, and handling the threat of Islamic terrorism, and derailing the Muslim jihad has also been pretty popular.  In fact, on those three issues alone, no other candidate comes close in the polls.  Even more surprising is that Trump is also the trust-leader regarding the social issues, too. . . though his lead there is not as huge as on immigration, the economy, and national security.

The biggest conundrum of all is that it isn't the Republican Moderate Class that has been tossing support in Trump's direction.  It's the conservative GOPers.  The Tea Party.  The folks that normally demand a pure candidate, and then attack if a Republican makes one wrong step in the wrong direction (or is perceived as doing so).

Popularity for The Donald seems to come down to what Trump is saying, and the fact that he is saying these things in a no-nonsense, no compromise, "enough is enough" manner.  The history of a candidate no longer seems to matter as much as his rhetoric.  We've been fooled by histories before, and besides, the Republican Party conservatives have had it up to their guzzle in broken promises, and weak noodle Republicans.  They want tough, and they want it now.  With most of President Obama's second term behind the Democrat, and all of the damage done by him, many of these people can't wait around for GOP strategies to formulate.  There's no time remaining, as far as these voters are concerned.  We need to slam on the brakes, and make a hard turn right, before the whole thing drives right over the cliff. . . sheep and all.

The problem is that though Trump is saying what everyone wants to hear, I am not sure he is believing everything he is saying.  His history is filled with political donations to Democrats, support for Democrat groups, and language that was once anything but conservative.  He has verbalized support for abortion during his lifetime.  He has wavered on many of the issues we find important during his opportunistic past.  And, he is almost a cartoonish stereotype of what the liberal left claims conservatives to be, making him a big, fat, easy target for the media when the true attack rush comes.

Don't get me wrong, I get it.  We are tired of politicians with empty promises that are afraid to confront the liberal left Democrats.  We are weary of wet noodles.  But is the answer really a former Democrat who admits to being a Democrat political contributor whose biggest asset is the way he says, "You're Fired!"?

I will admit, though, I got a great big kick out of how he got Rosie O'Donnell up in arms.  She is a vile human being, and using her in his response to Megyn Kelly's War on Women volley was entertaining.  Watching O'Donnell's response was an even larger confirmation regarding how vile and wicked the woman truly is.
