Throughout Europe the number of stabbings targeting police officers or military personnel has skyrocketed as the population of Muslims claiming refugee status has increased. This attack took place while France remains under a state of emergency prompted by the shootings and bombings that killed 130 people in Paris in November of 2015.
The attacker, identified as 25-year-old Larossi Abballa, was from the nearby suburb of Mantes-la-Jolie and was sentenced in 2013 to three years in prison for recruiting fighters for jihad in Pakistan. The killer was a member of a mosque around the corner from his home.
