What Is The Deep State?

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The political establishment is populated by more than the good ol' boys who seek to keep their incumbency by feeding the political machine in Washington, D.C.  The political establishment goes much deeper than that, nurtured and fueled by a bureaucracy that never goes away.  That's why term limits would never work.  The administrative horde that comprises a hidden fourth branch of government remains in place despite which politicians come and go.  New politicians coming in after the old guard goes away because of term limits are simply taught by the staffers the ways of the establishment.  Nothing changes, other than the names at the top because underneath the deep state is pumping away at full throttle. . . and nobody notices, or are willing to admit, that the bureaucrats do not have the best interests of America in mind.  They are infiltrators and deeply embedded moles.

In California, for exactly that reason, term limits has been devastating.  Term limits is largely what led to the Democrat super-majority in the Golden State, because as Republicans termed out, their GOP replacements were not bringing in the money their leftist counter-parts were bringing in.  Big money in the Republican Party is careful on how they distribute their funding, and the political party itself is reluctant to spend money in California where they believe it's a losing effort, and therefore would be a waste of money.

Meanwhile, the establishment has been packed with liberal left Democrats, socialists, communists and Muslims.  It has become a state within a state, and it really doesn't matter if the Republican Party holds those seats, anyway.  The representative is not reading the bills, the staffers are.  The representative is not interpreting what the language means, the staffers are.  The bureaucrats operate in the best interest of their political narrative, and they are willing to act overtly to make sure their GOP leadership fails, and is steered in the wrong direction.

President Donald Trump does not have good people serving him when you dig into the deeper levels of government.  The deep state is determined to undermine the GOP movement that Trump has begun.  That is where the leaks are coming from.  The enemy is indeed within, and is determined to destroy any opposition along the way.  So, if the Republicans wish to drain the swamp, it has to begin with the bureaucrats who have been deeply embedded in the political establishment and are sucking the life out of our republic.  Like the representatives at all levels of government, those positions were never designed to be held by lifelong ideologues who cannot be dislodged, but our enemies have ensured that they are.
