Quakes rattling California

By Douglas V. Gibbs
Author, Speaker, Instructor, Radio Host

Living in California one must realize that every once in a while earthquakes strong enough to feel emerge.  We have earthquakes all of the time, but most of them are small and go undetected by the average homo sapien.  Every once in a while, however, big ones pop up and we take notice.

When I was a kid the Sylmar Quake and the Whittier Quake were the two that disrupted my life the most.  The Northridge Quake a short while back definitely had everyone talking, and repair crews working just north of Los Angeles.  Now, the ratting has begun again, and talk about the big one has emerged.

In reality, I am pretty happy when we get some sizable shakings.  It relieves the pressure below, giving us a little more time before the inevitable "Big One." However, when the ground starts shaking, usually the talk about the coming big one expands, and folks are reminded they live in earthquake country.

Nonetheless, on Independence Day, and since, we've been getting our share of earthquakes and after shocks.  Where I live in southwest Riverside County we feel them, but they are nothing more than distant rumbles to us.  Still, it has become newsworthy.
