Mama Bear Shocks A Nation

By Douglas V. Gibbs

I am not one to watch a lot of television, but there are a few shows I genuinely enjoy.  Most of them are political programs, like Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, Last Man Standing; and some are not political, like Big Bang Theory, and of late, The Masked Singer.

Singing programs are not something I would normally seek out.  I wasn't really into American Idol, The Voice, or America's Got Talent.  But, The Masked Singer is different.  I enjoy the part about trying to figure out who is behind the mask.

Sometimes, especially this season, the person behind the mask is a shocker.

As a political animal I recognize that the show is likely not going to be conservative-friendly.  Dr. Drew was an Eagle, and I think that got the closest to anything outside the inside-entertainment family.  I wondered if someone like Rush Limbaugh or Judge Jeanine would dare do the show.  Then I shook it off.  The liberal world of the entertainment industry would never allow such a thing.  Then, tonight's program knocked my socks off.

A bear sang Sir Mix-a-lot's Baby Got Back.  You know, the big butt song.  She rapped it.  One of the clues was that she was a mama bear, and so Robin Thicke was quick to guess Tina Fey was behind the mask.  Made sense.  Good guess.

Bear was the person with the least votes, despite a very fun performance, so it was her turn to remove her mask at the end of the show.  When she did, everyone was shocked.  It was Sarah Palin, former governor of Alaska, and McCain's V.P. running mate in the 2008 Presidential Election.

Suddenly, the clue package made sense.  "Hunter, and hunted ... (voice on radio: that bear can't see the forest through the trees, positively unbearable) ... coming out from hibernation ... maybe I've been a little bit polarizing, but just like a bear, it's all been about protecting my cubs ... tonight, I, Bear, exercise my right to do a killer performance."

Then after her performance, she said, "To not be able to see really much of anything out of this is really nice.  It's like, it takes the sharp edges off the world, everything looks a little softer, sweeter, I needed this, I love this."

Now that I know Bear was Sarah Palin, it all makes sense.

When the mask came off, the shock on Nick Cannon's face, and the panel's faces, was priceless.

When asked about the show, Palin commented, "This is the weirdest thing I've ever done.  That's for sure.  But, it's all about fun, it's unity, this is all good, this is something our country needs right now, too."

Bingo.

Kudos to Sarah Palin for stepping out of hibernation, and knocking it out of the ballpark.

What is so funny about it all is that Robin Thicke's Tina Fey guess was so close.  But, he guessed the fake Palin, never imagining that the real Sarah Palin was behind that bear mask, and was gracing the stage at the Masked Singer.

Fun stuff.  And yes, a unifying one, too.

Message to liberal America ... yes, conservatives let their hair down too, and sometimes we even rap about big butts.
