"I recognize that all of you have an obligation to ask questions knowing that there's none of you smart enough to frame it in such a way that I'm going to respond." - New York Representative (Democrat) Charles Rangel.
Rangel's comment, coupled with racist comments like: "Some Americans have not gotten over the fact that Obama is President of the United States. They go to sleep wondering, 'how did this happen?' Why do black people have to bargain for what is theirs? Why do we have to wait for the right to vote? Why can't we get what God has given us? And that is the right to live as human beings and not negotiate with white southerners and not court the votes. Just do the right thing," when referring to the health care debate, likening the fight to provide health care for the uninsured to the fight for civil rights, places Democrat Party leadership into a very difficult position.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi knows she needs to do something about Rangel, but unless the Democrats are put into a situation where they have to take action (like when Louisiana Democrat William Jefferson was caught with dirty cash in his freezer), Pelosi and gang will let Charlie Rangel continue to spew his racism and caustic remarks about anybody that isn't an elitist liberal politician.
According to POLITICO, the Democrats are better off to take no action. "Taking away from the Harlem Democrat his chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee would force Pelosi to make a series of unpalatable decisions about Rangel's successor that would create a ruckus in the Democratic caucus."
In other words, keeping power, keeping the radical supporters happy, and not disrupting their current cast of characters is more important than doing the right thing.
Pelosi knows that taking action about an out of control Rangel will infuriate the Congressional Black Caucus, and give the GOP yet another wound to pour salt on.
Speaker Pelosi has bigger things to worry about, like continuing to try and cram a federally funded, nationalized health care bill down the throats of the American People, who have repeatedly sent the message that the people do not want this kind of federal government intrusion into their lives.
In fact, a person close to Rangel has said that Pelosi "hasn’t even spoken to the congressman about this latest episode," referring to recent published reports that the 78-year-old Rangel has also underreported his assets by hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Troubles with ethics problems surrounding Rep. Jack Murtha (D-Penn.), along with Rangel's out of control mouth (along with a number of other Democrats like L.A. Representative Diane Watson calling Fidel Castro a bright young leader and praising Che Guevara for massacring the wealthy in Cuba, or California Democrat Maxine Waters threatening the government will "take over" the oil industry) will no doubt damage the Democrats in the midterms, and will probably result in the Democrats losing the House of Representatives to the Republicans (or if the GOP doesn't get their act together, we may see a record setting number of independents elected to Congress).
The Republicans are taking advantage of the latest difficulties in the Democrat Party camp calling Pelosi a hypocrite because she famously promised to "drain the swamp" of Congressional corruption, but is ignoring that corruption in her own party.
