If a Buddhist said on Fox News that Tiger Woods would reach forgiveness through some meditation, but warned Tiger Woods that he may not reach nirvana if he listened to his Christian friends, the Buddhist would have been congratulated for been honest and courageous. If a Muslim had stated on Fox News that Tiger's only spiritual hope was to turn away from Buddhism, shun Christianity, and accept Allah as the only God, people would have nodded their heads and proclaimed that they respected the Muslim for speaking out in concern for Tiger's spiritual identity.
Brit Hume stated as he believes, that forgiveness comes through Christ, and though Tiger may recover mentally, on a spiritual level only Christianity could offer the peace of mind Tiger will be searching for. And for that he was chastised by the press, and is expected to be ashamed for his statement regarding Tiger, and Buddhism.
In the case of the religious words by a Buddhist or Muslim, Christians would have been condemned for saying anything in rebuttal. Buddhists, however, are being embraced for being offended by Brit's statement that, in their eyes, said that Christianity was superior.
As do other faiths, Christianity believes it is the path to communion with God. Brit Hume believes in his Faith as much as anyone else believes in theirs. He should be congratulated for caring enough about Tiger's spiritual well-being to say something in the first place, probably well knowing it would be condemned as it was. Brit Hume should be thanked for caring enough to be willing to say anything at all.
When asked about his comments later by Bill O'Reilly, Brit Hume repeated his plea, "What I'm saying is, if Tiger Woods were to make a true conversion, we would know it. It would show through in his being and he would know it above all and he would feel the extraordinary blessing that that would be. And it would shine because he is so prominent. It would be a shining light. And I think it would be a magnificent thing to witness."
Brit Hume has always held my attention when he spoke, but now he has earned by sincere respect as well. Thank you for sharing your kind and caring words for Tiger Woods on a national stage.
