Like Sarah Palin, Liberty University Law School has decided to break its association with the Conservative Political Action Conference. In the case of Liberty University, the break is because of the inclusion of a Republican homosexual activist group at the event.
Focus on the Family did not follow suit, intending to maintain its co-sponsorship of the conference, despite disagreeing with the gay organization GOProud on the issue of gay marriage.
Tom Minnery, senior vice president of Focus on the Family Action, said that "We think we've got to engage the broader conservative movement and to be salt and light in that environment. We believe that social conservatism, biblical Christianity has a lot to say to the political culture -- and we want to be where the action is, so that's why we're engaging it." Ultimately, Minnery believes boycotting the event is the wrong strategy for social conservatives.
Liberty University has not rethought their position on this. Focus on the Family believes that is a mistake, because someone has to remain behind to "inculcate that conference with conservative Christian values." He also stated that it does not accomplish much to "charge off in a huff, pick up our marbles and go home," leaving no one at CPAC to counter the agenda of GOProud.
