By Douglas V. Gibbs
I have never found a person I agree with 100% of the time. We all have our own pet issues, our important principles or ideas, and things that irritate us. Even as a Constitutionalist, I get into conversations with my Constitution studying colleagues, and even then we meet with disagreement on occasion. Even a single word, like "troops," has created division between Americans that share so much in the sense of their liberty and nation of birth. Yet, "troops" can have people fighting mad at each other, protesting, attending rallies, and voting for candidates the voter believes more closely resembles their beliefs in what the troops are, what they should be, and where they should be performing their duties.
A grouping of persons, no matter the intention of the organization, and no matter at what level (be it great or small), inevitably leads to disagreement, debate, or just petty little differences within that creates back-biting and childish behavior. This is true because we are not beings of collective minds. We think independently, and we are individuals.
I am often criticized for guests I have on my show, or videos I post on this site, or resources I use. I am told about the source's political beliefs, past rants, corrupt connections, or whatever. The message being sent is that if I quote a person, then I am somehow proclaiming I am in agreement with everything they have ever said in their entire life. If I quote a news agency, then I am being told that I must agree with all of the source's business dealings, past connections, et cetera. And if I have a guest, the guest and I must agree on every point or else I am giving someone a stage to spew their opinions in error.
If I was to see a video I agree with, or like, and then research the person's history to make sure they have always agreed with every thought I have ever had, I would not be able to post a single video. If I had to agree with every point a guest on my radio program has ever made in their lives, I would have no guests. If every resource I used needed to be pure as the driven snow in my opinion before using any of their articles, I would not be able to use any resources.
We all disagree at one point, we all make each other mad at one point, we say something someone somewhere finds offensive at one point, yada yada yada.
In the words of my good friend Andrea Shea King, "Oh good grief. Grow up, people!"
Let's keep our eye on the ball, huh?
The "good grief" moment Andrea Shea King is referring to revolves around Mark Williams, a conservative radio talk show host and spokesman for the Tea Party Express. On his blog, Mr. Williams used satire to put forth a few ideas. Reading it brought to mind Rush Limbaugh's statement that he illustrates absurdity by being absurd.
The illustration of absurdity is a post on his blog (the link here is actually the response to it) that is a mock letter from NAACP president Benjamin Jealous to former President Lincoln. The humor, or the perceived tastelessness, is a matter of perspective, I suppose. Sort of like that billboard with Obama, Lenin, and Hitler on it. The makers of the billboard saw a connection that the leftists are trying desperately to cover up.
Could the same be said regarding Mark's mock letter?
But here is where the pure childishness comes into view. . .
The National Tea Party Association (problem number one, trying to make the Tea Party Movement an organization. . . ) has decided (unanimously, I might point out) that:
The membership of the National Tea Party Federation has this evening suspended and will immediately expel Tea Party Express from any further association with the Federation should they fail to publicly rebuke Mark Williams and remove him from their ranks by 3 pm eastern time Saturday July 17.
The rebuke must take the following form:
1. Mark Williams must be officially removed from the ranks of the Tea Party Express.
2. Notice of Mark Williams’ removal must be placed prominently on the official Tea Party Express website.
3. Tea Party Express must issue a press release articulating points 1 and 2 above.
That's like the Cartoon Watchers of America getting together to rebuke Bugs Bunny for tricking Elmer Fudd. . . it is all a part of the game. Don't like it? Go watch Sylvester and Tweety instead.
For the slow minded, my point is that there is no Cartoon Watchers of America, nor should there be one, because watching cartoons is a free choice and as Americans we have the opportunity to practice voluntary association with other cartoon watchers, should we so desire. If a bunch of cartoon watchers decided to organize into an association, and then go around determining who was allowed to watch cartoons, or claim they watch cartoons, they would not represent the vast majority of cartoon watchers, and their "proclamations" would be laughable at best.
The National Tea Party Association, is in essence, the political version (via the Tea Party Movement) of the Cartoon Watchers of America. Just because they decided they want to exist, and that they somehow represent a nation full of Tea Party activists, does not mean they do, and in reality, their antics does more damage than good.
This is not to say I am condemning all members of that association. As Christ said on the Cross, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."
But I do believe Andrea Shea King's statement, "Oh good grief, Grow up," captures how I feel the best.
Let's put this into a larger perspective. We have a group of politicians currently running our federal government that desires to change that form of government into a socialist model that is proven to fail. They are, as CNBC's Rick Santelli said at the start of the Tea Party movement, ". . . promoting bad behavior. . . see if we really want to subsidize the losers' mortgages. . . How many of you people want to pay for your neighbor's mortgage?"
The Democrat led Congress, and the Obama White House, are ceding power to the executive branch in areas it shouldn't, are stealing power from the people, are deliberately ignoring their own rules and the U.S. Constitution, are voting on legislation they have not read and has not even been written yet, are spending trillions of dollars we don't have, are funding corrupt groups like ACORN and labor unions for political purposes, are forcing legislation upon us in defiance of the will of the people, are expanding the federal government by using fascist tactics of corporatism, are expanding the executive branch through the unconstitutional appointment of unaccountable czars (a practice, by the way, that has been wrong in every presidency that has utilized them), are contorting the Constitution to protect only their pet causes and people, has ensured that over 3 million jobs has been lost despite their claims the stimulus plans would save jobs, what jobs have been created have primarily been in the public sector and most of them are temporary jobs, have expenditures to congressional districts and zip codes that don't exist, had raised taxes and is preparing for even more severe tax hikes, has shrank the economy by $300 billion, are orchestrating a redistribution of wealth (a la Marxism), are utilizing political payoffs, are developing a war chest for future Democratic election efforts, and are self-proclaimed champions of policies that are both a fraud and miserable, destructive failures. This is especially troubling when you realize that these programs are being put into place through fearmongering, and grim warnings that failure to pass these monstrosities would plunge us into a depression of a scale never seen before in American history.
In short, we are up against a Democrat Party that has lunged so far to the left of late that they are poised to destroy the very fabric of American society.
We don't have time to be bickering over minor, childish B.S. in our ranks.
"But," says some of my colleagues, "there are reports in the media about how insensitive. . . "
Let me stop you folks right there. Though it is necessary to sometimes respond to the idiotic attacks of the Left, since when is what any of them say worth a plugged nickel? We know they don't understand economics, we know they are bankrupt in the arena of ideas, we know their aim is to destroy America and replace it with a utopian system of impossible proportions, and we know that they are currently doing whatever they can to make their Marxist dreams of conquest over freedom and liberty a reality - so why do we give what they say any credibility?
Simply put, you can't reason with the unreasonable, and there is no reason to let their irrational banter affect your emotions or thoughts like that. They don't think, nor do they have the capability to see beyond their socialist dreams of failed policies. We, those not blinded by leftism, do in fact have the ability to think, or at least I thought so. So we need to ignore the liberal left, defeat them in November, hold the new Republican cock-roach's feet to the fire, and on the big issues do what we can to return America to the course she was on before influences like Alexander Hamilton's, Woodrow Wilson's, Franklin Delano Roosevelt's, Lyndon B. Johnson's, Jimmy Carter's, Bill Clinton's, and the grand daddy of all of the insane leftist idiots - Barack Obama's, grabbed a hold of the helm and turned this great ship called "America" off course.
Put away childish things. It's time to save America. Otherwise, as Reagan told us, we could be telling our grandchildren someday what America once was like when men were free.
