RNC Chairman: Steele Out, Preibus In

By Douglas V. Gibbs

One of the most spineless RNC Chairmen I can remember in recent history is finally out. Michael Steele is intelligent, and when he fills in for various talk show hosts he actually sounds conservative, and like someone that is not necessarily a member of the republican establishment elite. His actions, or should I say "inactions", speak louder than his smoothly crafted verbiage.

After seven rounds of voting, Steele has been knocked out, and Wisconsin GOP Chairman Reince Priebus is the big winner.

Steele said, as he walked away, that the Republican Party's "ready for something different." Perhaps, but Preibus has not proven anything yet.

The real question is can Preibus guide the GOP into the direction that the Tea Party is leading it, or like all of the other GOP elites, will he simply shift the party into liberal-light?

As leading spokesman promoting the Republican Party's agenda, Preibus has his work cut out for him. He will be a large part of fund raising, and after the enormous money-pot Obama pulled off during the last election, it is evident that the GOP needs all the help it can get in that department. As for countering the Democrats, I am just hoping that Preibus isn't as spineless as steele.

Time will tell.

One thing about Reince Priebus that does disconcert me is that the Wisconsin Republican Party chairman ran Steele’s chairmanship bid in 2009. Having this kind of tie to Steele, it makes me fear that the GOP, from the standpoint of the RNC Chair, is in for much of the same garbage.

I am hoping I am wrong.
