DON'T FORGET TO READ THE UPDATE AT THE END OF THE ARTICLE. . .
Aside from my political interests, and my passionate love of baseball, I am also a huge football fan. My teams? Interestingly enough, in college the Arkansas Razorbacks, and in the NFL the Oakland Raiders. So, when in the fourth round the Silver and Black picked up Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson, I was pretty jazzed. I admitted to everyone I know that Tyler was not the most skilled quarterback in the draft, but his appeal is his toughness. He reminds me of players like Stan Humphries who once led he San Diego Chargers to the Super Bowl (where they laughingly lost big), and Jeff Hostetler (and you can throw Rick Gannon in there, too) of the Raiders. Like Wilson, these quarterbacks were tough. They'd get beaten to the ground, and they would still find a way to get up again. That is who Tyler Wilson is. But the Raiders apparently could care less about ruggedness. They are looking for a quarterback who can throw the damn ball.
So, after Tim Tebow was cut from the Patriots, everybody is saying he may wind up on the Raiders.
That's right, Tebow's horrible throwing mechanics could come to the team that cut their fourth round draft pick because he wasn't throwing well enough.
Don't get me wrong. I am a big fan of Tebow. I love his attitude, I love his work ethic, and I love his hard hitting style of play. But he is not a quarterback. He needs to move to Tight End, or something, don't you think?
Oh, and while the sports writers are saying that the release of Tyler Wilson proves the pick was a mistake, I want to say I disagree. Wilson was a good pick. They are not willing to see him tough it out. The team is so bad this year, they can't afford to waste a roster spot on just another quarterback that can't play. They already have Flynn and Pryor for that.
Which is why the Tebow talk really confuses me. . . yet, it may make a little sense.
As bad as Tebow has been, he's been throwing better than the Raider quarterbacks, and he does muscle a bruising down-your-throat style of play the Raiders are looking for.
He's got more experience than all of the Oakland quarterbacks combined, too. And who can argue that the Raiders need his positive attitude in their locker room right about now?
UPDATE: Tyler Wilson is not completely gone. He will be on the practice squad. Fellow Hog Madre Hill was on the Oakland practice squad for years, after a short stint in Europe. . . Wilson will have to prove himself if he wants to be placed on the roster. Granted, there is no talent at quarterback, so his job of proving himself is not insurmountable.
