The greatest San Diego Padre, among the greatest of natural hitters with a .338 lifetime batting average, eight batting titles, a member of the 3,000 hits club, the only member of both San Diego Padres World Series squads during his 20 year career, a fifteen time all-star, and a first ballot Hall of Famer in 2007, Tony Gwynn, passed away this morning. He was only 54.
I am an avid baseball fan, and though my team is a bit up the Pacific Coast in Anaheim, as an Angels fan it was not hard to appreciate the greatness of Tony Gwynn to the south.
The amazing thing about Tony Gwynn was not only that he spent his entire career with the same team, retiring as a member of the San Diego Padres squad, but that such a big name in baseball was also such a class act. He was a nice guy according to everyone who knew him, and he was also among the lowest paid superstars, never campaigning for a huge contract. He loved the game, and just wanted to do what he could for the team.
Gwynn had been battling cancer since 2010, when he had an operation to remove cancerous lymph nodes from his parotid gland. He later had surgery to remove a malignant tumor from the inside of his right cheek in 2012 and recently had to take a leave of absence from coaching San Diego State due to his cancer treatments.
