Corona Constitution Class: How Colonial America Influenced U.S. Constitution

Instructor: Douglas V. Gibbs, Corona Constitution Class
Tuesdays at 6:00 pm

Much of the debates during the Constitutional Convention in 1787 included research of government systems in history, including writings by Cicero, Polybius, Solon, and Montesquieu.  The delegates compared notes about the structure provided by the Saxons and Israelites (in the Book of Deuteronomy), as well as the rise and fall of systems in Rome, Greece, Slovenia, and the Mother Country of England.  But the greatest influence on the debates during that convention was their own experience, the history of the colonies, and the liberty they enjoyed when the British Empire was not trying to impose mercantilism, or unfair taxation on the colonies.

Tonight's discussion in the Corona Constitution Class dips into that history.  We will be looking at the history of The Colonies, and the nation under the Articles of Confederation, to determine how the new Americans came to the conclusions they did during the convention in Philadelphia in the midst of a sweltering summer in 1787.
