Suicide Places Capitol on Alert

By Douglas V. Gibbs

As U.S. Capitol Police were investigating a suspicious package on the lower West Terrace of the U.S. Capitol Building, a possibly related event occurred near the Washington Monument.  A man put a gun to the front of his head, pulled the trigger, and is dead.  The man did not have any identification, nor did he reveal prior to shooting himself that he was going to commit suicide.

Staffers at the Capitol Building sheltered in place as a precaution, and the lockdown was not lifted until just before 4:00 pm.  The West Terrace remains closed.

NBC Washington is reporting that a federal official told them, "There are no indications at this point of terrorism," but this writer will not be surprised if a terrorist connection is uncovered.

Witnesses say the man who shot himself had a placard, or a sign, that said something about the 1% needs to be taxed, or something about the 99%, a possibly reference to the Occupy movement.
