Here we go again:
A lone gunman fired thirteen shots inside a crowded movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana, on Thursday evening, killing two women and wounding seven before taking his own life, police said.
Gunfire erupted during a 7 p.m. CDT showing of the film Trainwreck. Two people died in the hail of bullets before the fifty-nine-year-old suspect, identified as John Russell "Rusty" Houser, killed himself with a handgun as officers rushed to the scene, Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft told a Friday morning press conference.
The shootings took place almost three years to the day after twelve people were killed at a cinema in Aurora, Colorado, and follows several mass shootings in the United States in recent weeks.
Authorities said seven people were wounded, three of them critically. One person underwent surgery and "was not doing well," Craft said.
Police did not immediately offer a motive and did not disclose any clues they might have found.
Well, Mr. Houser was white, so there's part of their motive right there. On the other hand, the story doesn't racially identify any of his victims, so that at least strongly implies that none of them were black, which suggests that this incident was at least outwardly random. Though evidently not a hopeless, suicidal act of "going out in a blaze of glory":
Last night’s tragic mass-shooting spree in a Louisiana movie theater ended with the suicide of the gunman, fifty-nine-year-old drifter John Russell Houser, but that was not his original plan. Houser staged disguises in his hotel room and had switched plates on his vehicle, which he parked right outside an exit door of the Lafayette theater. Did he plan to escape with the disguises to confound police, and perhaps strike again? Police believe so, but a quick police response — in part thanks to two of the wounded — confounded the shooter.
The rapid police response came as a result of the quick thinking of two other movie patrons who were wounded in the attack:
NBC’s Today show offered an update today on the story, including the description of two wounded teachers who managed to set off the fire alarm, which may have limited Houser’s spree. Jena Meaux and Ali Martin are being hailed as heroes today:
Oh, and did I neglect to mention that Mr. Houser has a long criminal record, so he most likely had his guns illegally anyway? And that cineplexes are generally "soft" targets?
It will not, of course, matter to Second Amendment loathers like the Gun-Grabber-in-Chief:
Barack Obama says the issue that has left him "the most stymied" is the debate over gun control.
Obama tells the BBC he is "frustrated" that the U.S. does not have "commonsense gun safety laws, even in the face of repeated mass killings."
i.e. Somehow he hasn't gotten around to unilaterally repealing the Second Amendment and imposing the full-scale police state necessary to confiscate all guns. Yet.
Obama says that while fewer than a hundred Americans have been killed by terrorism since September 11th, 2001, tens of thousands have been killed by gun violence.
Convenient that he leaves out the three thousand that were slaughtered ON September 11th, 2001.
Still, it's apples and oranges. That false comparison evokes the Thor-Loki debate in Avengers I:
THOR: Earth is under my protection.
LOKI: And you're doing a marvelous job with that. The humans slaughter each other in droves while you idly threat. I mean to rule them. And why shouldn't I -
THOR: You think yourself above them?
LOKI: Well....yes.
THOR: Then you miss the truth of ruling, brother. The throne would suit you ill.
Barack Obama dreams of an America free....from freedom. And he's frustrated there are still some of us who want no part of his "benevolent" rule. So he's going to have to force it upon us. For our own "good," of course. As V.I.K.I. put it in I, Robot:
You cannot be trusted with your own survival....to protect humanity, some humans must be sacrificed. To ensure your future, some freedoms must be surrendered. We will act to ensure mankind's continued existence. You are so like children. We must save you....from yourselves. Don't you understand?
Just as O doesn't understand the difference - bitterly ironic, given half his ethnic heritage - between dying free and living as slaves. But then no wicked tyrant ever has.
But he'll keep on trying:
He says the nation's inability to resolve the issue is "distressing" but that he intends to keep working on it. [emphasis added]
I second Captain Ed's admonition to keep the survivors' and the two victims' families in our prayers, as well as what's left of our country. Just don't let on that they're not being directed to Allah.
