Chattanooga Terrorism

By Douglas V. Gibbs

December 30, 2014, I was a guest on Al Jazeera America.  The topic was immigration, and the host asked me a question that led to me explaining how the immigration laws are in place to protect the receiving population from disease, a criminal element, and a terrorist element.

"Can you name a single terrorist that has crossed the border?" the television host snidely responded.

I explained that before the influx of South Americans, a study had been done at the San Ysidro crossing that revealed one in three illegal aliens crossing the border near that station was of Middle Eastern descent.  Thinking about my response, later, I wonder if I should have said, "It only takes one."

In addition to terrorists entering our country as illegal aliens, we are letting them freely come to our country through legal means, as well.  And for that matter, Islam has been reaching out to Americans, in an attempt to radicalize our own people so that they may commit jihad against the United States on American soil.

Folks ask me, sometimes, if I think the Islamic Jihad is coming to America.  I tell them, the "Islamic Jihad is already here."

Shortly after President Obama sealed the deal with Iran, and I believe there may be a connection in the sense of how Obama's policies are emboldening the enemy, a terrorist attack was launched in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  A friend of mine recently moved to Tennessee to get away from the madness of Southern California, and now I am wondering if he is re-thinking his strategy.

The shooting by a Muslim in Chattanooga killed four United States Marines (and possibly a Navy Sailor).  The gunman performed his jihad against two military facilities, wounding two service members and a police officer, in addition to the four Marines he killed.

After it was all over, the shooter also lay dead.

The gunman was identified as 24-year-old Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, who was born in Kuwait and came to the United States in 1996.

Authorities did not have Abdulazeez on their radar, and did not consider him to be a threat.  It is unknown if he was connected to, motivated by, or influenced by the Islamic State, or any other terrorist organization, and he is so far being considered as a "lone wolf," a term being used for terrorists that act completely independent from outside influence by terrorist organizations.

The FBI promises they will take an "intense look" into his connections and influences in their attempt to investigate the reason behind Abdulazeez's attack.

A connection to Islam is normally all the connection a jihadist needs to perform a deadly attack.  There are no psychological reasons beyond the fact that he is Muslim, and this is what Muslims do.

The Department of Homeland Security says they plan to take measures "enhancing the security posture at certain federal facilities, out of an abundance of caution."

Within hours of the shooting law enforcement swarmed what was believed to be Abdulazeez's house, and two females were led away in handcuffs.

The military facilities attacked were a recruiting center on Old Lee Highway in Chattanooga where five branches of the military all have adjoining offices and a Navy Operational Support Center and Marine Corps Reserve Center, about 7 miles away from the first shooting location.  All of the people killed were shot at the second location.

It is also important to understand that recruiting locations are normally gun-free zones.

Our prayers and well wishes go out to all of the victims, their families, and all other folks adversely affected by this Muslim terrorist attack against the Unites States on American soil.
