The French lawyer and political philosopher, Baron de Montesquieu (1689-1775) was alive and writing his publications just prior to the time of the American Revolution. While his reflections regarding sound government and liberty was not exactly the rage in France, he was quite popular in Britain, and especially read widely in the English Colonies of the New World. Montesquieu's writings were one of the integral factors in the formation of the American Government. His articulation of a separation of powers and a mixed constitution proved to be pivotal to the creation of the United States Constitution. His ideas regarding a separation of powers were derived from the writings of Polybius (200-118 B.C.), a Greek historian and political philosopher who covered the rise of the Roman Republic and challenged the Greek policies of pure democracy.
